HOW TO: Finding Land

HOW TO: Finding Land

Here’s one way to find land…

  1. Go to zillow.com .
  2. Type in your location of interest then zoom in or out to cover an area a little broader than your interest.
  3. Click on “Filter”.
  4. In the first major grouping, make sure “For Sale” (and all its subordinates) is the only one checked.
  5. In the next major grouping, make sure “Lots/Land” is the only one checked.
  6. Click “Apply”.
  7. Hover your mouse over each of the little red house icons to see the price, ignoring the tiny photos.
  8. For any of interest, click on it to see a pop-up detail box.
  9. Take a note, preferably in a spreadsheet, of the price (“$”) and size (“Lot”).  The size is in square feet, where 43,560 square feet is one acre.
  10. For interesting properties, Look at the specific property page.  To do this, right click on the link at the top of the pop-up detail box, and then open the link in a new tab or window.  Note that you’ll end up with multiple tabs or windows open.
  11. While on the specific property page, scroll down to see the aerial photograph.  Zoom in and pan around to glean additional property characteristics of interest.
  12. Compare prices, sizes, and other characteristics of interest.
  13. Pick your top few properties and drive out to visit them, preferably unattended by the seller or an agent.
  14. Repeat all of these steps until you find the right property.
