How to build your own home
How to build your own home? Boy is that a big question. I’m sure that there are many ways, but in this series of posts I will share with you how my wife and I did it.
I’ll be dividing the job into multiple categories, such as Foundation, Interior, Exterior, and Landscaping. Using the menus on this blog, you’ll be able to narrow down your interest to one of these areas. Or, using the search, you can get even more specific. But if you’re a glutton for punishment, you’re welcome to read through the whole thing.
Above all, realize that building your own home can be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ve ever had. It sure has been for me. And when I say “build your own”, I really mean it. I took a year and a quarter off from my regular job. During that time, I directly led my own inexperienced crew of 7 workers, including myself, as we actually physically built the house in which I now sit and write this blog. I’m not talking about spending hours on the phone negotiating with and scheduling sub-contractors. I’m definitely not talking about just directing a general contractor. No, I’m talking about putting on the boots and the tool belt. Trudging through the mud. Carrying materials. Measuring, cutting, drilling, screwing — screwing to the tune of over 400,000 fasteners used to build our home, made from steel-reinforced concrete and light guage steel trusses and framework — no structural wood in this baby.
But it all begins with finding the land…
